Will the VAT on private school fees now make it even more competitive for my child to get to grammar?
It is true that there could be more pressure to get into certain Grammar Schools this year. However, most of the Grammar schools now prioritise local students. This will hopefully help reduce the VAT in private school issue.
The majority of grammar schools in Gloucestershire have now incorporated local policies into their admissions criteria. As a result, if the number of qualifying applications exceeds the available places, the schools will prioritise applicants based on their proximity to the school or designated postcode zones.
So, while a high 11+ score is essential, location still plays a role in final place offers, especially for these often-oversubscribed schools.
For your information here are some statistics of recent 11+ applications over the last few years:
3,130 pupils sat the Gloucestershire 11+ in 2024 (a 20% rise since 2022)
There are around 1,050 Year 7 places across the seven grammar schools
This means roughly 1 in 3 students secures a place
At Pate’s, competition is especially fierce, with only around 5% of applicants gaining admission.
