11 Plus Preparation

One of the biggest challenges in the GL 11+ exam is not just understanding the text—it is finishing on time.

In comprehension papers, children are expected to work quickly and accurately under strict time limits. A good timing strategy can make a big difference to scores.

The correct timing strategy

For a typical GL-style comprehension with 16 questions, a good timing plan is:

1 minute skim read + 16 minutes answering questions

This gives a total of 17 minutes for the whole comprehension task.

Step 1: The 1-minute skim read

The first minute should NOT be a detailed read.

Instead, the goal is to:

  • Quickly understand what the passage is about
  • Notice key names, places, and events
  • Get a general sense of the story or topic

A useful technique is to follow the words while skimming. This helps the brain stay focused and process the text more quickly, instead of losing place or skipping lines.

However:

  • Do not stop on every word
  • Do not try to memorise details
  • Keep the reading fast and smooth

The aim is to build a “mental map” of the passage, not a perfect understanding.

Step 2: 16 minutes for 16 questions

Once the questions begin, aim for:

1 minute per question

This means:

  • Easy questions may take 30–40 seconds
  • Harder questions may take up to 90 seconds
  • Some questions may require briefly going back to the text

The key is to keep moving and avoid getting stuck.

Why this timing works

This method is used because:

  • Every question is worth the same number of marks
  • Spending too long on one question loses easy marks later
  • Most answers are found in the text, not from memory

Good timing often improves scores more than reading ability alone.

How to find answers quickly

Instead of reading the whole passage again, use this method:

  • Find the keyword in the question
  • Go back to the passage
  • Read 1–2 sentences before and after
  • Choose the answer based on evidence

This is faster and more accurate than re-reading everything.

Common mistakes in comprehension timing

1. Spending too long on the passage

Some children read the passage too carefully or more than once.

Fix: Only do a 1-minute skim read

2. Getting stuck on difficult questions

Some questions are designed to be harder than others.

Fix: Move on and return later if time allows

3. Not sticking to 1 minute per question

Slow questions lead to unfinished papers.

Fix: Keep checking the time and move steadily

4. Re-reading instead of searching

Reading the whole passage again wastes time.

Fix: Scan for keywords instead of re-reading everything

Example timing plan for 16-question comprehension

  • 1 minute → skim read
  • 16 minutes → questions (1 minute each)

Total:17 minutes

17 minutes

Summary

To succeed in GL 11+ comprehension, children need both reading skills and strong timing skills.

A simple but effective approach is:

  • 1-minute skim read to stay focused and build a mental map
  • 1 minute per question to answer
  • Move on quickly if stuck

This method helps children:

  • Finish all questions
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve accuracy under pressure

Good timing is often the difference between a mid-score and a high score in the 11+ exam

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL:

We cannot recommend Nicki Moodie and her expertly designed 11 Plus programme highly enough. The whole package is very thorough and went above and beyond our expectations,  identifying and targeting gaps in our child’s knowledge.

The Zoom sessions and the GL course on exam technique were invaluable! The non-academic preparation, including relaxation and breathing exercises, really helped our child with their nerves.

The mock exams are an exceptional part of the whole preparation. They closely mirrored the real test, meaning there were no surprises on the day. Our child felt calm, confident and fully prepared.

We are extremely grateful and would highly recommend Nicki Moodie and her 11 Plus programme to anyone seeking an outstanding 11 Plus tuition course and mock tests.
